Leadership Continuity, Proficiency and the Future of Pennsylvania Freemasonry

One of the greatest strengths of Pennsylvania Freemasonry has always been the dedication of its leaders. Across the jurisdiction, countless brothers have devoted years – and often decades – of faithful service as secretaries, treasurers, trustees, ritualistic instructors, district officers and lodge leaders. Their experience, institutional knowledge and commitment have helped sustain the fraternity through changing times and challenges.

At the same time, healthy, sustainable lodges must proactively prepare and empower future leaders.

Current and proposed updates to Masonic Law and related Grand Secretary’s Office policies are intended to encourage leadership development, mentorship, cross-training, succession planning and organizational sustainability throughout the fraternity. These changes are not intended to discourage long-serving officers, but to recognize the importance of balancing experience and continuity with opportunities for qualified brethren to grow and serve.

Under the updated guidance, service in the same elected or appointed position beyond 10 consecutive years will generally require additional review and approval. Similar guidance applies to repeated service as Master of a lodge. In each case, the focus is not simply on years served, but on broader questions of proficiency, leadership development, sustainability and the long-term health of the lodge or Grand Lodge body.

While exceptional service may absolutely justify continued tenure, it should also demonstrate active mentorship, succession readiness and efforts to develop future leaders who can eventually assume responsibility. Lodges and Grand Lodge bodies should strive to avoid becoming overly dependent upon a single individual, regardless of how capable or dedicated he may be.

In coordination with the Education, OPS and Membership System Training & Support committees, the Grand Secretary’s Office will develop proficiency standards, educational materials, study guides and assessment tools for key leadership positions to ensure that officers entrusted with critical responsibilities possess the tools and support necessary to perform those duties successfully.

Ultimately, these changes are about preserving the long-term strength of Pennsylvania Freemasonry by honoring the dedicated service of today’s leaders while helping ensure that capable leaders will be prepared to serve for generations to come.
