Brother William Wallace Dudley (1851–1938) began his lifelong fascination with timepieces at the age of 13 when he apprenticed with a maker of ship chronometers in Canada.

He immigrated to the United States, where he worked with the Waltham Watch Company in Waltham, MA. In 1906, he joined the Hamilton Watch Company in Lancaster, PA, as designer and superintendent of manufacturing.

Dudley’s dedication to Freemasonry inspired his greatest work. In 1920, he partnered with two local retail jewelers who were also Masons to form the Dudley Watch Company, dedicated to producing his visionary Masonic pocket watch. The design that set Dudley’s watches apart was his patented Masonic bridge—the internal component that not only supported the gear train but was shaped to depict an array of Masonic symbols: a slipper, plumb, trowel, level, square, compasses, the letter “G” and a Bible.

Today, Dudley Masonic watches are among the most treasured pieces for collectors of horological and Masonic memorabilia. Fewer than 2,600 of the Masonic design were made during the years of original production in Lancaster. Their rarity, intricate symbolic design and the story of their creator’s passion have solidified their place as prized artifacts in both watch-collecting and Masonic circles.
